Cyprus Case Study

Led by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR)

Overview: Cyprus’s fishing sector is dominated by small-scale fisheries (SSF), which make up most of the country’s 780-vessel fleet. These traditional boats are central to coastal life and identity, but are increasingly affected by climate change and invasive species.

Challenges: Climate change is altering marine ecosystems and fish availability. The spread of non-indigenous species through the Suez Canal threatens biodiversity and the viability of SSF, as many invasive species are toxic or unsuitable for local markets.

Solutions: Pilot Electronic Monitoring Systems (EMS) to improve fisheries data and decision-making. Develop tools to track non-indigenous species and an albacore distribution model to guide fishing toward high abundance and low turtle-risk areas, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
