Northeast Atlantic Case Study

  Led by Sjókovin

Overview: The Northeast Atlantic pelagic fisheries target herring, mackerel, and blue whiting. These species migrate across several countries’ marine zones and provide important food for human consumption and aquaculture.

Challenges: Countries set their own catch limits, causing overfishing and loss of certification. Climate change shifts fish distribution, raising tensions. Access limits and landing rules reduce efficiency and increase fuel use.

Solutions: Create shared catch agreements, improve cooperative access to different countries’ fishing areas, and adjust management to changing fish distributions. Better coordination can reduce environmental impact and protect these valuable, climate-friendly fish resources.
