MeCCAM Case Study
Case study 4 (CS4) covers the whole EEZ of Iceland, which is already being impacted by climate change. The Icelandic seafood industry already deals with the impact of climate change, and yet work on mitigation and adaptation is still in early stages. The Seafood industry is economically very important in Iceland, and the country‘s biggest seafood company, Brim hf, is a partner in MeCCAM and a part of CS4. The project, therefore, has the potential to have a significant impact on the Icelandic and European seafood industry, since Iceland is the second largest fishing nation in Europe behind Norway. CS4 activities include advancing fishing gear to increase selectivity and minimise environmental impact, advancing a Fishing Strategy Optimisation DST to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and advancing and demonstrating an environmental management software for the seafood value chain that reports and quantifies impact. Additionally, the CS will explore the potential of utilising and valorising the underutilised zooplankton Calanus finmarchicus. Other partners in CS4 include Trackwell, Stika and Sjokovin.
